Whether you’ve been daydreaming about sipping margaritas on a beach, exploring temples abroad, or wandering through cobblestone streets in Europe, you’re not alone.

A new study reveals where Americans most want their passports to take them — and the results prove that wanderlust is alive and well.

According to travel platform Lake.com, Americans are searching for their next big getaway more than ever, and the top three dream destinations are Mexico, Japan, and Italy.

Mexico Takes the Top Spot

It’s official — Americans can’t get enough of Mexico. With more than 255,000 monthly searches, Mexico is the most sought-after travel destination right now.

And when it comes to cities, Cancun steals the show with over 100,000 searches a month, accounting for nearly 40% of all Mexico-related travel searches.

With its turquoise waters, all-inclusive resorts, and close proximity to the U.S., it’s easy to see why so many people are choosing to trade their daily grind for a few days of sunshine and salt air.

Japan Rises to Second

Coming in second is Japan, with over 156,000 searches per month. The country’s mix of tradition and technology has clearly captured American travelers’ imaginations.

Tokyo, with its neon skyline and world-famous food scene, leads the way with more than 42,000 searches.

From cherry blossoms and sushi to futuristic shopping and ancient temples, Japan offers a little bit of everything — and Americans are paying attention.

Italy Rounds Out the Top Three

Italy takes third place, attracting about 152,000 monthly searches. It’s no surprise — Italy has long been a favorite for travelers who love history, art, and, of course, food.

Rome ranks as the country’s most-searched city, with over 40,000 searches, as travelers dream of standing beneath the Colosseum or tossing a coin into the Trevi Fountain.

Whether it’s pasta in Florence or sunsets in the Amalfi Coast, Italy continues to be one of those “once you go, you’ll always want to go back” kind of places.

Other Popular Dream Destinations

Rounding out the top 10 dream destinations for Americans are Greece, Canada, the United Kingdom, Costa Rica, Spain, France, and Thailand — proving that beach lovers and culture seekers are equally eager to explore.

Here’s a quick look at the top 15:

The Standout Star: Bali

Among all the destinations, Bali stands out for just how dominant it is. The island makes up a staggering 86% of all Indonesia-related travel searches, showing just how powerful a single destination can be.

With its lush landscapes, beaches, and focus on wellness and spirituality, Bali clearly remains a dream escape for many.

What These Trends Say About Travelers

According to David Ciccarelli, CEO of Lake.com, these search patterns reveal that Americans are drawn to destinations that offer a mix of beaches, culture, and memorable experiences.

He explains, “Mexico’s dominance isn’t surprising given its proximity, affordability, and variety. But what’s fascinating is how some countries are defined by one iconic city — like Paris or London — while others, such as Costa Rica or Australia, attract travelers who want to explore multiple regions.”

Ciccarelli also notes the growing interest in Asian destinations like Japan and Thailand, pointing to a shift toward more diverse, culturally rich travel experiences.

Dreaming Beyond Borders

At the end of the day, these numbers prove one thing: Americans are ready to travel — not just to escape, but to explore.

Whether it’s lounging in Cancun, getting lost in Tokyo’s streets, or tasting gelato in Rome, travel continues to be a reminder of how big, beautiful, and connected the world really is.

So maybe it’s time to check your passport, dust off your suitcase, and start dreaming. Because no matter where your next adventure takes you, one thing’s certain — the world is waiting.
