- An analysis of cosmetic surgeries carried out in the U.S. revealed that the fastest-growing procedure is cheek implants, with a 177% increase in procedures carried out over five years.
- Buttock lift and aesthetic breast reductions rank second and third.
- Overall, liposuction is the most popular plastic surgery, with almost 350,000 procedures carried out in the U.S. over 12 months.
A new study has revealed which cosmetic surgeries saw the biggest increase in procedures carried out over five years.
The study by the liposuction and blepharoplasty specialty clinic Derma Laser Center of New Jersey analyzed data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in the United States for the years 2019 and 2024. This analysis identified which cosmetic procedures experienced the greatest increase in frequency over the five years.
1. Cheek implant (malar augmentation)
The plastic surgery with the biggest increase in the number of procedures carried out over the period analyzed is cheek implants. The frequency of this procedure increased from 3,295 carried out nationally in 2019 to a huge 9,130 in 2024. This is a 177.09% increase in procedures, the fastest growth of any procedure in the U.S. In the last year, the most common age group undergoing a cheek implant procedure is 40–54-year-olds, while 74% of procedures were carried out on women.
2. Buttock lift
Buttock lift procedures experienced a 101.62% increase in 2024 compared to 2019, with the number of procedures carried out rising to 7,954 from 3,945 five years prior. The findings revealed that the average cost of the procedure in the U.S. surged 67% in just five years, rising with the demand to an average of $9,250.
3. Breast reduction (aesthetic patients only)
Seeing significantly more procedures than the two higher-ranking surgeries, there were 76,734 breast reductions undertaken for aesthetic purposes in 2024, up from 46,340 in 2019. This equals an increase of 65.59% and ranks the surgery third among the fastest-growing nationally.
4. Nose reshaping (rhinoplasty)
Rhinoplasties or ‘nose jobs’ as they are commonly referred to rank fourth on the list. The findings revealed that there was a 49.07% increase in this procedure when comparing figures from 2024 to 2019, rising from 32,484 procedures to 48,423. Nose reshaping procedures were also found to have had one of the highest increases in price over the period, rising 84% to an average of $10,000 in 2024. In the same year, the procedure was most popular among 20-29-year-olds in America.
5. Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)
One of the most popular plastic surgeries nationally, according to the data, tummy tucks were revealed to be the fifth fastest-growing procedure in the U.S. In 2024, a total of 171,064 patients underwent the surgery, up 44.71% from the 118,210 patients in 2019. This procedure was found to be overwhelmingly most popular among women, and specifically patients aged 40-54 years old.
Dr. Ayman El-Attar of Derma Laser Center of New Jersey commented:
“It is interesting to see the changing attitudes towards different procedures. While generally, the majority of procedures experienced an increase in patients undergoing them, the results of which have surged in popularity are fascinating.
“The rise in body contouring procedures such as buttock lifts, breast reductions, and tummy tucks suggests a shift in what patients are looking for when it comes to cosmetic enhancements. Instead of perhaps shaping their bodies to try to fit a beauty standard, it suggests that patients are more interested in enhancing their natural appearance, to portray aesthetically, how they would like to be seen and increase comfort within their own skin.
“Plastic surgery, used for aesthetic purposes, should not be undertaken with a ‘one-size-fits-all approach’; instead, it can be used as a tool to help promote self-confidence and self-expression, should someone wish to undergo a procedure.”
