There’s a lot of freedom that comes along with choosing gig work over full-time jobs, but is that freedom enough for Gen-Z and young Millennials?
The number of young people earning money doing gig work has doubled over the last six years. Why are young adults going this direction more often?
Gig work offers more freedom

Full-time jobs often require young adults to adhere to a strict 40-hour work week. That type of schedule doesn’t leave much room for freedom.
It certainly doesn’t allow young adults to experience peace of mind on an adequate level. Some gig work examples include:
- rideshare driving
- pet sitting
- Instacart grocery delivery
- freelance writing
- virtual assistant work
- and social media management.
These gig jobs are providing young Millennials and Gen-Zers with loads of freedom… but they still don’t seem to be enough to cover all expenses.
The new trend is that young adults are simply changing their spending habits instead of returning to full-time jobs.
Cutting out frivolous spending in exchange for extra freedom is what’s enticing them the most.
In other words, young adults would rather have their daily freedoms by working gig jobs than spend money on Birkin bags, diamond chains, or $1000 concert tickets.
