Serena van der Woodsen brings the chaos on Gossip Girl and because of that, I feel that she would thrive in the Euphoria universe if she was dropped there as a character during her teenage years.

I’m an independent pop culture journalist after spending seven years writing and researching professional entertainment articles for iHeartRadio, RapTV, and other outlets.

I can confidently say that Gossip Girl and Ephoria are two of my favorite shows of all time. I post a lot of deep dives about these shows here on my channel.

I genuinely feel like Serena is the type of wild child fictional character that could be plucked out of the Gossip Girl world, and added to the Euphoria universe with the smoothest and most flawless integration.

These are my thoughts.

Serena, the social butterfly

Serena is a social butterfly who fits in generally everywhere she goes. We’ve seen evidence of that time and time again on Gossip Girl.

When she first returned from boarding school to the Upper East Side, she had her short-lived feud with Blair, but that didn’t last very long and they were besties again in no time.

And Blair obviously isn’t Sabrina‘s only friend on the show. Serena found friendships in almost all her romantic relationships, and with Jenny Humphrey before Jenny became her official sister-in-law.

She even knows how to balance frenemy dynamics with people like Georgina Sparks.

All that being said, I feel that Serena would fit in to the Euphoria universe with her outgoing personality, extroverted energy, and natural sense of welcoming warmth.

It would be easy for her to make friends with characters in the Euphoria universe, simply based on her unreserved and easy-going nature.

Serena can relate to Euphoria characters about having shitty parents

Serena wouldn’t be able to connect with the characters of Euphoria on a deeper level regarding her issues with her parents.

One thing that’s obvious to know about the characters of Euphoria is that pretty much none of them have super great relationships with their parents.

Rue is constantly fighting with her mother about her sobriety. Jules is being raised by her daughter alone since her mother is an addict.

Maddy is constantly getting in screaming matches with her mother while her dad acts like he doesn’t care about anything.

Cassie‘s father is an addict and her mother is an alcoholic. Nate’s father is a perverted and abusive creep.

Fezco parents are completely absent. Like… The family dynamics and parental issues in euphoria are actually insane.

And for this reason, Serena would fit right in. Serena’s daddy issues stem from the fact that her father abandoned the Van der Woodsen household.

His choice to abandon the family left Serena with serious emotional wounds, and put a severe strain on her relationship with her mother.

Serena keeps her heart open to love

Someone with a heart closed to love probably wouldn’t fit in well in the Euphoria universe since relationships and romantic connections are such a crucial aspect of the show.

I strongly believe Serena would fit into the Euphoria universe based on the way she keeps her heart open to all possibilities regarding love. Serena is the type of character who lives for love.

We’ve seen Rue keep her heart open to love with Jules. We’ve seen Maddy, Cassie, and Nate stuck in a very complicated love triangle. We’ve seen Fezco lay the groundwork to pursue a relationship with Lexi.

The characters on Euphoria might have a million things in the world on their minds, but keeping their hearts open to love is something they still somehow always do.

And for this reason, I feel that Serena would fit right in with the best of them.

On Gossip Girl, we saw Serena date so many guys before ultimately ending up with Dan Humphrey as her husband.

Her long list of boyfriends, flings, and romantic partners serve as proof that she’s never been the type of character to shut the door on the possibility of true love.

Serena never brags about her wealth status

One of my favorite details about Serena is that she never brags about her wealth status.

She’s clearly a very wealthy girl living on the upper east side, but that doesn’t mean money is ever a topic of conversation from her.

When I watch and rewatch episodes of Gossip Girl, one of the things I noticed about her is that money is something she simply never talks about or brings up in conversation.

Interestingly enough, none of the super wealthy folks really talk about money. It only seems to be a topic of conversation for those who don’t have as much money, mainly Dan Humphrey, Jenny Humphrey, and Vanessa Abrams.

But Serena specifically doesn’t brag about her wealth status, which means, in my opinion, that she would fit in well on Euphoria.

No one in the Euphoria universe is anywhere near as wealthy as Serena, but they also don’t necessarily talk about finances either.

Being rich doesn’t make you more popular or cooler than anyone else in the Euphoria universe.

That being said, it wouldn’t help or hurt Serena‘s reputation if people knew she was wealthy.

But since she’s the type of character who doesn’t make her wealth her personality and barely ever even acknowledge it, she would fit in well on Euphoria focused on so many other things that are way more interesting.

Serena cares about fashion and makeup

There are so many reasons to love Gossip Girl, but one of the big reasons so many fans have flocked to the show is that the fashion is so fun to see.

It’s been almost two decades since Gossip Girl first premiered, but a lot of the outfits we saw on Serena are still considered glamorous enough to wear almost 20 years later.

Serena was forced to wear a uniform to attend Constance on the Upper East Side (a prestigious private school) but her uniform didn’t stop her from still looking amazing every day.

She accessorized with the right jackets, shoes, purses, gloves, scarves, jewelry, and anything else to spruce up her uniform, and make herself stand out in a crowd full of private school girls.

And on the weekends, she dressed so incredibly well that there are still public forums all over the Internet of people ranking and rating all her different outfits.

Serena rocked long blonde hair, pretty effortlessly through all six seasons, and she kept her make up clean-cut and gorgeous.

Most of the time she relied on a little bit of eyeliner, mascara, lipstick, and blush. All that being said, I feel that Serena would fit into the Euphoria universe based on her fashion sense and make up choices.

I will say that the makeup on Euphoria is way more intense and creative than any of the make up we’ve ever seen on gossip girl, but that doesn’t mean Serena wouldn’t be able to keep up with everyone else if she were to suddenly be placed into the Euphoria universe. Since Serena is such an independent individual though, I don’t know if she would quickly flock to the makeup counter to buy a bunch of new products just to fit in with everyone else.

Serena has always been the type of girl who stands on her own two feet and stands tall, knowing that she doesn’t have to conform to what everyone else is doing. So even if she didn’t alter her make up style at all, she’d still be just fine in the Euphoria world. Some of my favorite fashion and makeup looks on euphoria come from Jules, Maddy, Cassie, and Kat. The way they dress comes across like they’re sending the world a message, and I feel that’s something Serena would totally vibe with and bounce off of.

Serena has seen both sides of betrayal

One of the biggest most obvious reasons I feel Serena would mesh well with Euphoria character. Characters in Euphoria world is that she has seen both sides of betrayal and come out alive on the other side. Betrayal is incredibly heartbreaking because you can only be betrayed by someone you love and trust.

Betrayal doesn’t happen from enemies. It happens from friends and lovers. And Serena has been through it, very much like some of my favorite euphoria characters. Serena betrayed Blair when she hooked up with Nate Archibald at the Shepherd wedding.

She helped Nate cheat on Blair because she was being a drunken idiot and a pick me girl who prioritized getting these attention in that moment more than Breaking Blair’s heart. But Serena found herself on the other side of betrayal when Jenny Humphrey, a.k.a. Little J, tried to slide in on Nate and steal him from her after Nate and Serena officially started dating a few years later.

Serena treated Jenny like a little sister, so it was a bit drawing to her to realize that Jenny would do something so conniving. You found yourself on both sides of betrayal on Gossip Girl, so she has a deep understanding of characters, like Maddy, Cassie.

Serena understands betraying a friend the way Cassie did, and she understands being betrayed the way Maddy was.

Serena understands the seriousness of drugs

The last biggest reason I feel Serena would not only survive in the Euphoria universe, but also thrive is that she actually has a personal and deep understanding of the seriousness of drugs. Serena has messed with some of the most serious substances that go beyond mary jane and alcohol, and she knows the way these things can ruin a person‘s life.

In fact, she sat next to Pete Fairmain on that hotel room bed when he passed away of an OD. So Serena of all people really understand the dire seriousness of messing with substances on that level.

And the majority of our time spent on Gossip Girl is her proving that she’s no longer the type of girl who lives at lifestyle or messes with those things. Sure, we saw Serena relapse when Georgina Sparks came back to town, but for the most part, Serena turned her back on that lifestyle to keep her nose clean because she wanted a bright future for herself.

So if she were to be dropped into the Euphoria universe, her life wouldn’t be thrown off track being around people who have chosen that path for themselves.

Rue Bennett has lived a very tragic lifestyle so far on euphoria with an all consuming and debilitating drug addiction. That’s not something Serena would get caught up in, even if she and Rue spent time together. And by the way, I posted a video here in my channel comparing all the similarities of Serena from Gossip Girl and Rue from Euphoria if you’d like to check that out. Serena has a very objective perspective when it comes to illegal substances, since she is messed with them in the past herself, and no longer wants to touch them as she moves towards her brighter future.

Drugs are very big deal in the Euphoria world, but they’re not something that would alter the trajectory of Serena‘s life, in my opinion. And the big reason I feel that way is because Serena made it such a priority in gossip girl to elevate it become a better version of yourself who she could actually be proud of.
